Who is running SWOTS and where will it take place?
SWOTS was developed by the faculty at the United States Air Force’s Air Command and Staff College (ACSC), located at Maxwell AFB, Montgomery, AL. The workshop is supported by other elements of Air University (especially the Department of Spacepower and the Schriever Scholars Program at ACSC, and the West Space Seminar at Air War College), as well as MGMWERX. Workshop sessions will be held in downtown Montgomery.
What is expected of the participants?
This will be a crash course in the study of space. As such, we expect participants to put forth a significant effort before, during, and even after the workshop. We will provide all participants with a reading list shortly after we notify them of their acceptance. We ask each participant to complete an extensive set of readings before attending the workshop. We also expect a great deal of participation during the meetings, drawing not only from people’s own experiences, but from the readings as well. After completion of the program, we will ask everyone to complete evaluations so that we can improve the program, and we will also stay in contact with participants to continually ascertain the effect of the workshop on their professional development.
What will participants gain by attending SWOTS?
In developing the workshop, we had four major goals in mind. First, we want to increase the public’s knowledge of space, its opportunities and its challenges. To this end, we combine presentations from experts in the field and government officials, with space readings (both classics and modern works).
Second, we hope to not only teach about space, but to train participants to teach others. As a result, we will discuss different elements of space, as well as some of the "best practices" for relaying the information to others, such as the use of active learning.
Third, we hope to improve the quality of academic research in the field, by introducing scholars and practitioners to existing ideas, as well as the variety of approaches to studying space.
Finally, our goal is to strengthen the community of individuals who deal with space, whether as a teacher, researcher, or government official. To bridge the gaps that typically separate these arenas, we plan to include participants with widely divergent skills and goals, and not only instruct them on the basics, but help them to develop bonds that will improve society’s ability to understand and confront the challenges of space. We will also pursue this goal through a series of gatherings outside the classroom, including informal gatherings and formal dinners.
How do I attend SWOTS?
SWOTS participation is by invitation. The application form is available here for the 2022 workshop (the deadline for applications is 22 June).
What will be the lodging situation?
This is a unit-funded TDY event. A block of rooms will be held for SWOTS participants (located near the meeting location and local eateries). We have secured rooms for the current federal rate (currently $96/night in Montgomery + taxes/fees). More details will be provided to those who are attending.
How do I get to the Workshop?
Montgomery (MGM) is the local airport, although both Birmingham and Atlanta are within 90 minutes and 2 hours of MGMWerx, respectively.
Participants should plan to arrive the day before the workshop begins (Sunday, 24 July) and stay through the end of the workshop.
What about food?
Participants are responsible for their meals. For planning purposes (mostly for federal employees), the current per diem for Montgomery is $55/day.
There are several places to eat within walking distance of the workshop location (a guide will be provided to participants upon their arrival).
What is the dress code?
Participants should generally plan to wear business casual for the five days of sessions. Alabama typically has temperatures in the 90’s during July, and it can be very humid, so dress comfortably, but also keep in mind that the meeting room may get cold because of air conditioning.
What COVID protocols will be in-place and can I attend virtually?
This is an in-person workshop and there is no virtual option. At a minimum, we will adhere to the COVID protocols in-place by the city of Montgomery and the state of Alabama, including social distancing and wearing of masks. All participants are strongly encouraged to receive their COVID vaccine and booster(s) before attending, although we do not require it and will not ask for proof of vaccination.
